Sounds Like Teen Spirit

When Muxtape died at the heavy hands of the RIAA it was a sad day for those of us who enjoyed sharing and discovering new music via old skool mix tapes. Thankfully, OpenTape brings the music back to the masses! I’m relaunching my monthly mixes and hope you’ll share your mixes if you have them. more

Mux it up: The heady days of summer are here!

It turns out that the sun DOES still exist, despite the doubts created by an unusually cold and cloudy Junuary. The month of July one of my favorites, since it brings softball games after a month long break, camping, hiking, garden-fresh produce, evenings in the back yard, lazy afternoons in the hammock, and – oh yeah – my birthday! more

Mux it up: Spring, you'll be a Summer soon!

Thoughts & Deeds June Muxtape

June. A month that’s not quite spring and not quite summer, the middle child, the Janet Brady of the season. June means it’s Rose Festival time in Portland, which means Tall Ships, Fleet Week, and fireworks. June means a break in my softball schedule. June means Father’s Day. June means Gay Pride Month. June means waiting for summer to start in the Pacific Northwest while the rest of the country has barbecues and fiestas.

June means a new Muxtape for you to enjoy, filled with tales of the sea, some silliness, some tunes from my youth, and plenty to help you wait for summer to arrive.

They were meant for the stage

When I received Ticketmaster’s concert update newsletter announcing that The Decemberists and Death Cab for Cutie would be playing together in Bend over Memorial Day Weekend, I knew I had to buy tickets. How could I miss seeing two of my favorite bands, much less see them both in the same show? That would be like passing on bacon-wrapped hors d’ouvres — foolish not to have at least one. By the end of the evening, it was clear that The Decemberists stole the show, and we all secretly wished they’d come back for an encore instead of Death Cab for Cutie. more

Oh hey, I made you a mix tape

When was the last time you said that to someone? Remember making mix tapes in high school, maybe even in college? Break up tapes, I have a crush on you tapes, a tape of Alphaville’s “Forever Young” repeated over and over… Then you used the photocopier to make fancy covers for you tapes, gave them to friends, maybe had a mix tape trading club (we had the Myxx Tayp Kollektiv). And where are your old tapes now? Do you even have a cassette player? more

Doin' the Hulu

I don’t watch very much TV. I just forget to do it, even if there’s a show I know I might like. Now, don’t think I’m some self-righteous anti-TV do-gooder, because I’m not. I love me some TV! Give me my stories! Make me laugh! Show me a gross autopsy! I want my Cylons! more
