This land is your land, this land is my land

I sent this email to the Obama/Biden campaign earlier today after reading Obama’s stance on Proposition 8 in California, same-sex marriage, and his Faith & Family tour.

Dear Obama/Biden Campaign,

I’ve been a big fan of the whole “change” campaign since the beginning, and feel like Obama can offer the nation some hope in the face of so much diversity. However, I’ve been a little perturbed lately by the campaign’s alignment with more conservative and “faith based” elements.

Specifically, I’m disappointed that Obama isn’t sticking to his guns on gay rights and equality issues, and is choosing to go on a faith and family junket with people who oppose equal rights for all Americans. As a gay woman who recently married her partner, I find it patronizing to have *my* rights used as leverage to appeal to middle America.

My rights aren’t a political gambit – they’re part of my life. Every day I live with inequality because of hateful people who want to deny me the decency and dignity guaranteed to all Americans. When I got married two weeks ago in front of 200 friends and family the world didn’t end, and my community and my life were enriched.

So please, stand up for us all. Stop pandering to conservatives and be the candidate we WANT rather than the lesser of two evils.

Yours in hope,
Stacy Westbrook
